Working in Partnership with Parents at Sweet Peas Garforth

Working in partnership with parents at Sweet Peas Garforth means sharing information, listening carefully and building relationships over time. Children feel more secure when the adults caring for them understand one another and work together to provide consistency between home and nursery.

A two way conversation at drop-off time can make a real difference to your child’s day. You might let us know that your child had a restless night, is excited about a family celebration or has suddenly become fascinated by a favourite book at home. This information helps our team offer the right reassurance, follow a familiar interest or simply understand why your child may need a little more comfort that day.

Collection brings another valuable opportunity to share information about your child. Alongside the updates you can view through the Famly app, our team make sure they feedback the personal moments they’ve shared with your child. It may be the proud smile after trying something new, a friendship that has grown during play or an activity that has captured your child’s imagination.

What partnership means to us

You know your child best. You understand the routines that help mornings run smoothly, the things that bring comfort after a difficult moment and the interests that make your child light up. Sharing this knowledge is an important part of helping our team get to know your child as an individual.

In return, the Garforth team shares day-to-day care information, observations and the experiences that shape your child’s nursery day. These conversations are not simply updates from nursery to home. Parent partnership in nursery is a two-way relationship, built through respectful communication and a shared focus on your child’s wellbeing.

Your child may be developing a new interest in vehicles, animals or a particular story at home. When you share this with the team, we can use it to inform play and create meaningful opportunities for your child to explore what already matters to them. Equally, when a team mmeber notices growing confidence or an emerging skill at nursery, sharing this with you can help you celebrate and build on it together at home.

This is what being parents as partners looks like in everyday nursery life: familiar conversations, shared knowledge and adults working together to help children feel understood.

Staying in the loop throughout the day

The Famly app gives you a clear picture of your child’s care and experiences during the day. Depending on their age and routine, this can include information about meals, bottle feeds, sleep, nappy changes and activities. Updates are personalised and you can view them at a time that is convenient for you and your family.

For many parents, checking this information before collection provides a helpful starting point for an end-of-day conversation. It can be reassuring to know that your baby has slept well, your toddler enjoyed lunch or your child spent time exploring an activity they particularly enjoy.

Digital updates are useful, but they do not replace the value of speaking face to face. A brief chat at the beginning or end of your child’s session can provide important context that an app just cannot capture. Perhaps your child is adjusting to a new bedtime routine, has been unsettled after an early start or is looking forward to a special event at home. These details help our team respond thoughtfully throughout the day.

Collection conversations also allow our team to share more about your child’s interests, progress and next steps. You may hear about a moment of persistence while they completed a puzzle, a new word they used in play or a kind interaction with another child. Often, it is these smaller details that help you feel connected to your child’s experiences at nursery.

The Key Person relationship

Your child will have a Key Person who builds a caring and professional relationship with both you and your child. Their role includes getting to know your child’s routine, personality, interests and stage of development, then using that understanding to support their care and learning.

Your child’s Key Person may help them settle at the start of the day, plan experiences around their interests or share observations that show how they are developing. They provide an important familiar link between home and nursery, particularly during times of change such as starting nursery, moving rooms or developing new routines.

Continuity matters to you and your child. Each Key Person is paired with a Significant Other, so your child has another familiar adult who knows them and can provide support when their usual Key Person is away.

You can find out more about our Key Person system and the role these relationships play in supporting your child’s wellbeing.

Settling in together

Starting nursery is a significant step for you, your child and your family. Some children feel ready to explore quickly, while others need more time, familiar routines and plenty of reassurance. Every child’s experience will be different.

During the first settling in session together, you will share the things we can do to help them feel safe and settled. This may include sleep patterns, comfort items, favourite songs, ways they communicate their needs or routines that are already familiar at home. Our team use this information to create as much consistency as possible while your child becomes confident in their new environment.

Communication remains especially important during the early days and weeks. You may notice a change in your child’s mood at home, while the team may be able to share a positive moment of connection or growing confidence at nursery. Together, these small updates help build a fuller understanding of how your child is adjusting.

The aim is to build trust gradually, allowing your child to form secure relationships with familiar adults and feel that nursery is a safe, welcoming part of their week.

Sharing what matters most

Your child’s experiences at home are valued because they help the team see a fuller picture of who they are. A new favourite book, a family celebration, an important event or a milestone can all provide useful context for their interests, emotions and conversations at nursery.

You are encouraged to add observations through the Famly app. A photograph of your child proudly trying something new at home, for example, can help practitioners recognise and support that learning at nursery too.

Sharing changes in routine can be helpful as well. Your child may be more tired than usual, adjusting to a new arrival in the family or feeling excited about a forthcoming occasion. When the adults around them have this understanding, your child is more likely to experience the calm, consistent support they need.

Raising questions, sharing feedback and staying connected

Questions, feedback and smaller worries are always worth sharing. You can speak to your child’s Key Person or a member of the Garforth leadership team, rather than feeling that you need to wait until something becomes a bigger concern.

Open and respectful conversations help everyone work together when your child needs extra reassurance, a consistent approach or support through a change. Your child benefits when home and nursery are connected by familiar adults who listen, share and respond with care.

Strong nursery parent communication is not about having every answer immediately. It is about building a relationship where you feel comfortable speaking openly and know that your child is known as an individual.
