Outdoor Play at Garforth: Why We Value Time Outside Every Day

Laughter carries across the garden as a small group of children race from one end to the other, coats half zipped and cheeks already pink from the fresh air. Nearby, a quieter child stands carefully at the edge of a low balancing beam, one hand hovering as they concentrate. A team member stays close, offering a gentle smile and steady encouragement. After a pause, one determined step forward turns into two. The smile of pride that follows says everything.

A little further along, muddy hands are busy stirring an imaginative “soup” made from leaves and twigs. Conversations flow easily. Ideas are shared. Confidence grows in ways that are sometimes subtle yet deeply important.

Scenes like this are part of everyday life at Garforth Nursery. Outdoor play is not saved for special occasions or only enjoyed on bright days. It sits naturally within our daily rhythm, woven into routines children come to know and trust.

Time outside is valued here because childhood deserves space, movement and moments of discovery.

Why Outdoor Time Matters to Us

Childhood is not meant to be lived sitting still.

At Garforth, movement is woven into the everyday because we know that bodies and minds are deeply connected. A toddler who has space to run, push, climb or balance is not just building strength, they are organising their thoughts, releasing big feelings and learning what their body can do.

You can often see it happen in real time. For children who are first settling with us, the fresh air, the rhythm of movement and the gentle encouragement of a familiar adult help them regulate in a way words sometimes cannot.

Confidence grows from these small physical achievements. One more step. One more try. A proud look back towards a team member who has stayed close.

At Garforth Nursery, outdoor play is part of daily life, not a treat and not dependent on perfect weather. Both of our outdoor spaces are designed for year round use, with soft crumb flooring underfoot to support safe movement. Our Baby Suite and Discoverer Suite children have their own dedicated outdoor area, carefully suited to their stage of development. Toddlers and Explorers enjoy a separate space where independence and bigger movement can flourish safely.

Time outside is intentional. Any skills and areas of development that can be developed indoors, can also be practiced outdoors. It is supervised closely by experienced team members who understand child development and know when to step in and the importance of becoming children’s biggest cheerleader when they are developing new skills.

Outdoor play here is not about filling time. It is about giving children the movement, emotional release and growing confidence that childhood truly needs.

More Than Just Letting Off Steam

Outdoor play is sometimes seen as a chance for children to burn off energy. In reality, it is so much more than that.

Out in the garden at Garforth, children are constantly thinking. They work out how safely to move a plank from one place to another. They negotiate whose turn comes next. These small moments are rich with problem solving, teamwork and growing independence.

Risk awareness develops naturally in a space that is carefully prepared and closely supervised. Children learn to judge distance, test their footing and understand their own limits. A team member is always nearby, offering reassurance and guidance, yet allowing space for children to make decisions for themselves. That balance helps them feel capable rather than cautious.

Imagination often expands more freely outdoors. Open space invites bigger ideas. A simple game can turn into a shared adventure, with roles assigned and stories unfolding as they move. Friendships strengthen as children collaborate and adapt together.

Physical development is happening all the time, from strengthening core muscles to refining coordination. Alongside this, emotional wellbeing is quietly supported. Movement helps children release frustration, manage excitement and return indoors feeling settled.

Resilience grows in these moments too.

When a child tries again after wobbling or works through a disagreement with support, they are building confidence that stays with them. Outdoor play at Garforth is not simply active time. It is thoughtful, purposeful and deeply connected to children feeling secure, capable and happy.

What Outdoor Play Looks Like at Garforth

For our older children, the climbing frame and slide quickly become places of both excitement and determination. Little hands grip firmly as they pull themselves up, legs steadying as they prepare to come down the slide. Large gym balls are rolled, pushed and balanced on, building core strength and coordination without children even realising they are practising important physical skills. During hockey, tennis or football games, teamwork begins to take shape. Children learn to wait for a pass, take turns and celebrate each other’s efforts.

The large sand pit often draws quiet concentration. Scooping, filling and patting down sand supports fine motor control while imaginative ideas unfold alongside it. Nearby, the mud kitchen and art easel invite creativity in a different way. Recipes are invented, stories are shared and paintings reflect whatever has captured a child’s interest that day. Large scale water play brings cooperation too, as children work out how to move water from one container to another without spilling it.

Younger children have space designed carefully around their stage of development. Grassed slopes encourage crawling, pulling up and early climbing in a way that feels adventurous yet safe. Balance beams allow tentative first steps to turn into confident strides, always with a familiar team member close by.

Running space is valued as well. Children need room to stretch their legs, to chase bubbles or simply feel the wind on their face. Across all areas, supervision is steady and consistent. Team members position themselves thoughtfully, watching, listening and stepping in when needed while allowing children the freedom to explore.

Moving, discovering, laughing and growing in confidence, all within an environment that is carefully prepared and calmly supported.

Safety and Reassurance

Stepping outside can sometimes raise quiet questions for parents. Is it safe? Are team members close by? What happens if my child feels unsure?

Outdoor play at Garforth is always supervised carefully. Team members are present, attentive and engaged rather than watching from a distance. They position themselves thoughtfully across the space, noticing who needs encouragement, who is ready for a new challenge and who may simply want a reassuring smile nearby.

Boundaries are clear and consistent. Children know where they can explore and where they need to pause. Equipment is checked daily and activities are planned with care. The aim is not to remove all risk, but to manage it sensibly so children can learn about their own capabilities in a secure environment.

Supported risk is an important part of growing up. When a child climbs a little higher or balances a little longer with a trusted adult close by, they are learning how to judge situations safely. That confidence develops because they feel secure.

Families can feel reassured knowing outdoor time at Garforth is calm, purposeful and always guided by caring team members who know each child well.

Supporting Every Child Outdoors

Not every child bursts through the door ready to run.

Some pause. Some watch. Some prefer to stay close to a familiar adult while they take in what is happening around them. That is completely understood at Garforth.

Outdoor play is inclusive because children are all different. Team members recognise that confidence grows gradually and in its own time. A quieter child might begin by sitting alongside a trusted adult, observing a game or exploring the sand with gentle encouragement nearby. There is no pressure to join in before they are ready.

Often it is the smallest steps that matter most. Holding a team member’s hand while walking across the garden whilst they comment on what they can see their friends doing. Standing a little closer to a group game. Trying the balance beam for just a moment before stepping back again. Each of these moments is noticed and celebrated quietly, helping children feel proud without feeling pushed.

Outdoor play here is not about being the fastest or the loudest. It is about helping every child feel safe enough to explore in their own way, building resilience one small success at a time.

Why It Matters Long Term

There is something special about watching a child who once stood at the edge now climbing with steady determination. The same child who needed a hand to take that first step across the grass begins to move independently, pausing only to glance back with a proud smile.

A quite child who used to observe from a distance slowly edges closer to a ball game. At first they watch. Then they roll the ball back. Before long they are running alongside their friends, fully part of the laughter. The change is rarely sudden. It happens through patient encouragement, familiar routines and team members who understand when to step forward and when to simply stay nearby.

Through gentle guidance and thoughtful planning, all children are able to enjoy meaningful experiences outdoors. Team members carefully consider how each activity supports the skills children are developing, while still allowing plenty of space for curiosity and choice.

Themes and ideas often flow naturally between indoors and outdoors, so children can continue their learning wherever they feel most comfortable. Whether they are building, exploring or joining a group game, progress happens in a way that feels seamless and familiar.

This approach means children are not limited by location. They are supported to grow in confidence and ability wherever they choose to play, always with a trusted adult nearby.
